Acatenango Volcano review: a tough, low-cost two-day hike from Antigua with sunrise views, volcano eruptions, basic camping, and practical tips.

“Louis was our guide and he helped us with everything throughout the tour. The hike was quite challenging, especially due to the constantly changing weather conditions, but the overall experience was absolutely amazing and unforgettable. I definitely recommend doing the Fuego hike (make sure to bring a headlamp!) — it’s full of adrenaline and really pushes your limits. Unfortunately we didn’t see anything climbing up to Fuego due to weather. Don’t forget to pack extra warm clothes and some additional supplies such as protein or energy bars, altitude sickness medication, and at least 3 liters of water. Extra tips: Don’t eat street food the day before;)”

“Hike is relatively easy, but in case there is a problem, horses are provided for 100 QTZ (one way). I advise against taking the horses though, since I feel like they don't treat them well. Unfortunately it was cloudy and I wasn'r really able to see anything. Hiking shoes are recommended but it can also be done in sneakers.”

“Our guides Aiden and Alex were amazing! We took regular breaks on the way up and they made us delicious food at the top! The hike is tough but if you’ve done any hikes in Patagonia for example then we found those to be harder. Take note that the toilet is a hole in the ground with no toilet paper or anywhere to wash your hands, so advice would be take enough toilet paper with you and some hand wipes! The a-frame cabins are equipped with 4 single mattresses on the floor which we shared with another couple. It was warm enough for the majority of the night but before…”

“I had a great experience. I went for my birthday as a solo traveler please do not take this hike lightly. I started out on foot, but had to use the horses 10 minutes in the only thing I was disappointed in was the price of the horse it said it was 300 online then the employee changed it to $300 going up the hill and $300 going down. Also, please bring a hat and gloves and also walking sticks. They’re $40 on Amazon and it’s definitely worth it.”

Review of the two-day Acatenango hike from Antigua, with Fuego eruptions, sunrise views, meals, camping details, costs, and practical tips.

“It was well organised with 4 guides to manage the individual needs within the group. The food provided was good. You don't need to take any additional water, just carry the 3L bottle that they provide. It's cold at night, make sure you take plenty of layers and accept their offer of goats, hats and gloves which are included in the price. Wear hiking boots or trail shoes. It's very slippery and slidey and running trainers don't hack it.”

“I was really excited about this experience—the opportunity to hike a volcano with like-minded adventurers. When I arrived at the office, I was surprised by how many people were there. I initially assumed there were multiple groups, but it quickly became clear that things were chaotic from the start. There was very little instruction, and people were essentially told to get in where they fit in. My group ended up being 40+ people for what was supposed to be a 16-person hike. The guides appeared to be very young and, unfortunately, didn’t seem to have the experience needed to manage such a large and varied group. We were never informed…”
